I must admit that this blog is not only a means with which to manage my thoughts but it also provides a way for me to vent my frustrations. I would ask those reading this blog not to mind my rantings but then again this is my blog:) Today was suppose to serve as my last night in Farmington Hills, Michigan with my family. Unfortunately, my flight was cancelled and I am now reduced to watching the comedic film "Trading Places" starring Eddie Murphy. It is this movie that really got me to thinking about character. Please let me explain the plot of the movie so you can be better aware of how this thought came about.
"Trading Places" takes place within the elitest society of Caucasians Americans working within Philadelphia stock exchange. As one could imagine, these such people carry themselves in a snobish manner, for lack of a better word. They look down on all those "below" their socioeconomic level. Contrary to this we have Eddie Murphy's character, also known as Valentine, who is a homeless man living on the streets of Philadelphia. He is obviously a person to be looked down upon by this society; however, it is within this exclusive group that two business men draft a deal. The bet is that if Valentine were to "trade places" with an elitest member of their society that Valentine will in fact develop snobish tendencies. Of course vice versa, the former member of that particular society would resort to crime and drugs.
This really makes me wonder about people in general. Would this "experiment" work in real life? And what about me? Would my character be altered due to my socioeconomic status? Of course, we as humans would love to think that the morals and behaviors taught to us as children would prevail in daunting situations; however, the fact of the matter is that as much as we live with ourselves, we still don't know ourselves and that's the scary part.
